works well

I have not started a fire with this yet, however I did test the sparking ability and it was fine. A word of warning to newbies. This is not a ferro rod so d'ont expect a shower of sparks. I'll try and repost when I use it.

flint and steel

First attempt at fire starting with flint and steel. Definitely a learning curve. This set is fun to get started with.

One Must Be Patient

I tried out the flint and steel as soon as I got it. About 10% of the strikes yielded a visible spark, and about 10% of those yielded an ember on the charred lamp wick. So you can get an ember with this kit. Experimenting with a file, it was no better at sparking than the supplied steel striker. The sharp edges of the supplied flint were gone after about 5 ignitions, so I found some quartz that seems to work (but not as well).

I experimented with char cloth. I cut a dead terrycloth washrag into pieces that would fit into an Altoids tin. I cooked the rags in the tin until no more smoke and flames were coming out. The resulting charcloth is a bigger target for the spark and seems to be very efficient at catching the spark and producing the ember.

Of course, a glowing ember is not a fire. I am not David West. So I got some sulfur at the garden supply store, melted a bit of it, and dipped the end of some Starbuck's sticks. The resulting matches produce flame almost immediately when touched to the glowing ember. No bird's nest needed.

I went solar with the charred lamp wick. First with a magnifying glass, then with the polished bottom of a diet coke can. I recommend Flitz metal polish to get the mirror finish you need. Then I did the same with an Arizona Iced Tea can (slightly larger reflector than Diet Coke). In all cases, I was able to get the glowing ember on the charred lamp wick.

Generally, I am delighted with the kit, and amazed that I was able to make it work. It is fun to play with fire!
